Curlew Press

gylfinir – cur·lew [ˈkəːluː]
a large wading bird of the sandpiper family, with a long downcurved bill, brown streaked plumage, and frequently a distinctive ascending two-note call.

Our aspiration at Gylfinir Press is to offer help support and encouragement. We are inspired by the story of St Beuno and the Curlew, which you can read below, and catalysed in our concern for nature by the fact that this precious bird is fast disappearing from our land.

One blustery morning many migrations ago, Gylfinir is busy herding clouds when he glimpses the Saint far below in his coracle. Beuno has set out from Clynnog Fawr on his weekly journey to teach Dwynwen’s people from the great book of Hope and Love.

All of a sudden, a large wave sweeps Beuno’s precious book overboard and, with a heavy heart he
continues on his way, dragging the tiny vessel high up the strand on the other side. In his dejection, he has failed to look around and see that...

... Gylfinir has switched back and is swooping downwards. And in the split second before the heavy volume disappears for ever beneath the surf, he clamps shut his mighty beak, glides low across the water and deposits it at the feet of the grateful saint.
